Investment Fund Attracts Entrepreneur Surgeons

Xiros actively seeks the collaboration of surgeons and other medical personnel to develop and manufacture next-generation devices at its facility in Leeds.

Medical device manufacturer Xiros plc (Leeds, UK) is banking on the entrepreneurial spirit of surgeons to help it develop innovative products. The company launched a £2 million investment fund in 2007 to entice surgeons and medical practitioners from the United Kingdom and elsewhere to bring them product ideas. More than 50 have been submitted thus far, 10 of which have come from British surgeons. Xiros expects to have the first products on the market by Christmas.

Who better than medical personnel to suggest improvements in device design, asks Xiros’ David Beevers. “With our research and development expertise and market connections, we are able to offer any medical professional with product ideas risk-free support to develop their concepts for minimally invasive medical implants,” he says.

Under the scheme, Xiros agrees to cover all research and development costs before moving into precision manufacturing at its Leeds site. One project that is nearing completion involves an improved version of an existing Xiros polymer tape for the repair of rotator cuff tears in the shoulder. The design revision was suggested by a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny in Wales.
