Jesper Nielsen is business development manager at thebigwordGroup’s life sciences division. He is based at the company’s Copenhagen office.

Accurately translating package leaflets and other informational material is of vital importance in the medical and pharmaceutical sectors. Beyond mastering the mechanics of converting instructions from one language to another, translators must have a solid grasp of medical terminology and be well versed in industry regulations. To meet the high standards of the medical community, translation and interpreting firm thebigwordGroup (Leeds, UK), has created a division specifically geared to the needs of this sector.

A provider of translation services to the life sciences sector for the past 30 years, the company has combined its regulatory monitoring operation and specialist translation, interpreting, and labelling services into one focused division. The newly created life sciences division addresses the particular needs and requirements of the pharmaceutical, medical device, biotechnology, contract research, and healthcare sectors.

“Medical clients need more than just translations,” says Jesper Nielsen, business development manager for life sciences. “They require an exact and consistent translation, which is why the staff of our new department only handles [projects] from medical companies.” Translators in the life sciences division tend to have degrees in the medical and pharmaceutical fields, he adds.

Certified to ISO 9001:2000, thebigword translates user manuals, leaflets, labels, and medical forms and records into more than 150 languages. Clinical data and protocols, and software for machines and medical devices also can be translated. “For medical device manufacturers, we create comprehensive dictionaries to ensure consistent translations and use of the correct terminology,” Nielsen stresses.

The company also offers desktop publishing. “Let’s say we receive a manual in a format such as InDesign,” says Nielsen. “We can do the work in that particular program and deliver a print-ready product.”
