Smith & Nephew and Invibio Collaborate to Develop Bioresorbable Polymers
Invibio Biomaterial Solutions, a manufacturer of implantable biomaterials for surgical and medical device applications, has announced that it will collaborate with Smith & Nephew to develop of a family of novel bioresorbable polymers. The companies hope the collaboration will yield advanced structural bioresorbable materials suited for rigid, load-bearing applications. Initially planned as a three-year collaboration, the project will be cofunded by the Technology Strategy Board, an executive body established by the UK government to drive innovation.

DSM Biomedical Receives Funding from Dutch Partnership
DSM Biomedical has announced that it has received funding from the Biomedical Materials Program (BMM), a Dutch partnership consisting of universities, university medical centres, patient organizations, and a variety of manufacturers. In all, BMM has allocated more than €50 million for various research and development projects. The funding will help DSM Biomedical expand its R&D portfolio and accelerate the development of new biomedical materials. Specifically, the company will use the funding to develop a variety of technologies to treat conditions including implant-associated infections, poor vascularizaton of tissue, intervertebral disc degeneration, and weak cardiac function.

SIM Assembly Machines and Vitronic Collaborate
Automation-equipment manufacturer SIM Assembly Machines and machine vision specialist Vitronic have decided to partner to offer their clients a wider range of services. As a result of the partnership, the two firms will work jointly on machine-engineering projects. Both companies have experience working with medical device firms.

Plastics Processor Opens UK Sales Office
Moretto S.p.A., which specializes in developing plastics processing machinery, has decided to open a UK sales office in Milton Keynes. The office will enable the company to offer direct sales and service to companies throughout the United Kingdom. The new location also will include a 200-m2 showroom facility dedicated to machine trials and demonstrations and 500-m2 of space for equipment storage.
