TI Introduces Development Kit for Medical Applications

The Zoom Medical OMAP35x Development Kit supports advanced graphical user interfaces, real-time physiological processing, and wired and wireless connectivity.

Designed for medical device and other embedded applications, a development kit from Texas Instruments (TI; Freising, Germany) and Logic Product Development (Minneapolis, MN, USA) supports features such as advanced graphical user interfaces, smart and real-time physiological processing, and wired and wireless connectivity options for patient monitoring and data logging applications. TI envisions that the kit will be used in devices for applications such as patient monitoring and medical imaging.

The Zoom Medical OMAP35x Development Kit is powered by TI’s OMAP35x processor, which features an integrated ARM Cortex-A8 core, TMS320C64x+ digital signal processor, and a graphics engine and video accelerators supporting two- and three-dimensional imaging. The OMAP35x processor provides laptop-like performance at handheld power levels, according to TI. The system object module (SOM) based on the OMAP35x platform will help medical customers quickly begin development and take advantage of a unique combination of high performance and low power consumption, says Srik Gurrapu, marketing and business development manager, low-power medical processors. Logic Product Development has placed the OMAP35x processor onto a SOM-LV Type III form factor module measuring 31.0 × 76.2 × 7.4 mm. “Having the same SOM in the development kit greatly reduces development time investment and risk for our medical customers,” Gurrapu explains.

Other hardware included in the platform includes Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, 802.11b/g wireless Ethernet, USB 2.0 OTG, 24 bpp TFT LCD controller, and a touch screen. A backlight connector is provided for optional zoom display kits.

The kit offers a flexible software development environment, enabling it to be used with operating systems such as Windows Embedded CE 6.0 and Linux.
