Designed for ultrasound diagnostic equipment, a family of fully integrated analogue front ends (AFEs) from Texas Instruments (Freising, Germany; www.ti.com/medical) is characterized by its image quality and low power consumption. The just-introduced AFE5805 chip occupies almost 50% less space, consumes 20% less power, and produces 40% less noise than existing integrated circuits. Its low noise—0.85 nV/rtHz at 2 MHz—makes the chip suitable for portable equipment as well as ultrasound systems. The chip integrates an eight-channel low-noise amplifier, a voltage-controlled attenuator, programmable-gain amplifier, low-pass filter, and 12-bit, 50-MSPS analogue-to-digital convertor with LVDS data outputs.
