A series of 1-in.-cube spectrometer modules are suited for use in small, handheld sensor products and instruments for visible spectroscopy, blood analysis, industrial process control, colour measurement, environmental monitoring, and many other analytical and biotechnology applications. The miniature RC-series modules from Hamamatsu Photonics UK Ltd. (Welwyn Garden City, Hants, UK; www.sales.hamamatsu.com) are designed to offer a cost-effective option for meeting OEM requirements. Providing flexibility in product development, they are rugged and environmentally stable and feature easy electrical interfacing and long-term stability of spectral calibration.
The company’s C94XX-series modules have a reflection grating permanently attached to a wide-dynamic-range CMOS linear image sensor. The C9407MA and C9409MA cover the spectral range from 340 to 780 nm, and the C9408MA and C9410MA cover 640 to 1050 nm. Light from a sample under measurement is input via an integrated 30-cm fibre-optic cable.
Including a universal serial bus that enables plug-and-play connection to a personal computer, the C9407 and C9408 modules can easily be assembled into portable equipment. They are supplied with free sample software with which the user can set measurement conditions, acquire and save data, and display data graphically.
