A compact light-emitting-diode (LED) multiplexing module that employs proven proprietary filter technology is available for incorporation into bioanalytical applications and medical instrumentation. The ZoroLight module, offered by the optical component supplier Bookham Inc. (San Jose, CA, USA; www.bookham.com), is designed to provide advantages in terms of brightness, efficiency, and space consumption over the traditional approach to LED combining. Rather than use lenses to capture light in free space, the module traps light in a tunnel of highly reflective dielectric-coated surfaces whose geometry is optimized for efficient source light collection and filter performance.
This LED module multiplexes as many as six wavelengths in the visible range, or red, green, and blue for white light, in minimal space. By accommodating multiple wavelengths and satisfying a variety of size and intensity requirements, it is customizable for medical device, diagnostic, and pharmaceutical OEM applications.
