Low-cost, low-weight, and high-capacity implantable batteries are suited for use with in-body monitoring devices.

Two medical-grade batteries suited for implanted monitoring devices have been introduced. The cells provide high energy density and a low entry cost, according to EaglePicher Technologies LLC (Joplin, MO, USA).

The lithium thionyl chloride cells are available in 350- and 750-mAh formats and are fully qualified for implantable applications. Capacities range from 500 µAh to 3.5 Ah. Typical applications include implantable cardiac and glucose monitors.
