Precision components are developed and fabricated to customer specifications by Rubis Précis (Charquemont, France; www.rubis-precis.com), which has extensive experience working with high-tech materials such as ceramics, synthetic sapphires, quartz, tungsten carbide, stainless steel, gold, and platinum. The ultrahard materials routinely processed by the firm can be polished to achieve low friction; other material properties include wear and corrosion resistance and thermal and electrical insulation. Gold and platinum markers are produced for stents and catheters, which, in addition to biocompatibility, provide the benefit of radiopacity. Other medical components available include ruby surgical knives, vitreous carbon electrodes for pacemakers, and alumina and zirconia femoral heads for hip joints.
