A very compact femtosecond regenerative amplifier can be configured for use in ophthalmologic and neurological devices and for nanotech processing. The femtoRegen UC device, supplied by High Q Laser (Bregenz, Austria; www.highqlaser.at), produces 2-W power at a 200-kHz repetition rate with a pulse duration of 350 femtoseconds.
The system is based on high-end Yb-doped laser materials to accommodate future power and repetition rate scaling. Use of the company’s patent pending Intra-Cavity-Chirped-Pulse-Amplification technology has enabled an extremely compact design. The 34 × 78-cm unit houses all of the pump laser diode modules, the seed oscillator, and amplifier.
The seed oscillator operates with a de-rated nominal pump current for improved mean time between failure. It is based on the firm’s patented resonator folding technique that withstands a 50-g shock test. A semiconductor saturable absorber mirror ensures passive and self-starting mode locking for temporal stability.
All supply and control functions are hosted by the unit’s all-in-one electronics to allow turnkey operation and easy system integration into products with a CAN bus and 24-V power supply.
