Cables designed for miniaturized applications have been developed with a core OD as small as 0.02 mm and a cable OD down to 0.15 mm. The product line joins other offerings from Leoni Elocab GmbH (Nuremberg, Germany; www.leoni.com) to address demand for ultrasmall connection technology for medical devices and other products.
Design engineers are increasingly seeking to integrate tiny microsystems that perform mechanical, electrical, optical, and even chemical operations within their products, according to the firm. As a result, demand is also surging for small, efficient, and reliable cable systems. Leoni has stepped up its efforts to provide OEMs with such products.
The company’s new miniature cables, which can measure half the thickness of a human hair, are encased in specially formulated insulation and jacket materials. In addition to flexibility, the design optimizes packing density and electrical properties.
Leoni has set up a dedicated production cell within a cleanroom for the fabrication of these cables. In addition to cables, the company can supply assemblies tailored for specific applications.
