New Medical-Grade Ceramics Combine Purity and Durability

Developed specifically for medical and surgical applications, a new line of ceramic materials was introduced in December by CoorsTek (Golden, CO, USA; www.coorstek.com). All CeraPure materials, including alumina, zirconia, and zirconia-toughened alumina, are USP Class VI compatible.

The materials offer enhanced dielectric strength, thermal stability, strength, hardness, and insulating capabilities compared with traditional nonceramic medical component materials, according to the company. The CeraPure line was developed to satisfy demand from manufacturers for materials that can accommodate the medical device market’s next-generation requirements, says executive vice president Mark Chenoweth.

Applications include electrosurgical devices, laser systems, and fluid-handling products.
