Compact System Supports Five-Axis Machining

A compact universal milling machine from DMG Vertriebs und Service GmbH can be equipped with a spindle attaining 42,000 rpm.
A universal milling machine with an approximately 4-m2 footprint offers features typically found in larger machining systems such as simultaneous five-axis machining. The smallest in a class of compact universal milling machines from DMG Vertriebs und Service GmbH (Bielefeld, Germany; http://gildemeister.com), the DMU 40 MonoBLOCK system can be equipped with a spindle turning at 18,000–42,000 rpm. Longitudinal and lateral motions can be performed by the milling head, and the system allows machining in negative angles and supports loads up to 250 kg during five-axis milling. Suited for processing simple and complex workpieces, the machine can be used for a variety of medical applications as well as for creating tools and moulds.

Standard features of the unit include a 250-L coolant tank, fully enclosed safety cabin, collision monitoring, a scraper-belt chip conveyor, and an energy supply integrated into the milling head. A liquid-cooled motor spindle, digital drives with direct measuring systems, geometric temperature compensation, and open CN controls are also standard. An Ethernet interface is provided to simplify access to external networks. In addition, the machining system offers hot keys that can be programmed to quickly access frequently used screen selections.

The system is designed to facilitate access to the work area via a large transparent door and to give the operator the flexibility to create a comfortable operating position. The console and 19-in. flat screen are adjustable. When the door is closed, the work area can be viewed through a large shatterproof and scratch-resistant safety-glass panel. An optional seat can be integrated into the unit.
