Stama Introduces Six-Side Machining System

A six-side machining system from Stama features two workstations that can operate simultaneously.

Featuring two independent columns and spindles, the MC 726/MT-2C system from Stama (Schlierbach, Germany) performs machining operations on five sides of bar stock at one workstation before transferring it to the other spindle, which performs machining operations on a sixth side. Meanwhile, the other workstation begins machining a new component.

The unit, which was unveiled in September at the EMO trade show in Hannover, Germany, supports continuous production of complex parts with applications including short runs of surgical tools and implants. According to the company, the system enables a gain of almost 100% in productivity compared with conventional milling/turning systems.

Suitable for mass-producing machined parts, the unit supports drilling, thread cutting, external and internal turning, facing, and contour turning. The machine accepts bar diameters of up to 80 mm, while 100 mm is possible by customizing the system. A smaller version of the machine, the MC 726 MT/ Compact, accepts diameters of up to 42 mm.

The milling-turning centre is fitted with the firm’s interference check system that enables the centre to monitor all movements on-line, thus avoiding part collision resulting from manual errors or improperly programmed commands. The CNC-controlled turning/swivel unit with an integrated turning spindle can operate at 5000 revolutions per minute with a swivel angle ranging from –30 to 90°. Milling operations can draw on up to 200 N•m torque, while spindle operations support up to 280 N•m. The patented tool changer offers a switchover time of 1.9 seconds.
