The Trumpf Group (Ditzingen, Germany) and Jenoptik AG (Jena, Germany) have announced that they intend to set up a joint venture to develop laser components. The two firms would each have a 50% share of the venture. Subject to antitrust approval, the new company will be headquartered in Jena and will have a 20-member staff.
Branded JT Optical Engine GmbH + Co. KG, the joint venture would develop, produce, and market optical modules, known as optical engines, for fibre-optic lasers. In addition to pump diodes and control and beam management systems, the optical engine is an integral component of fibre laser devices. The company will develop the modules for third parties worldwide and for internal projects.
In particular, JT Optical Engine will focus on developing optical engines for low-power fibre lasers up to 1 kW. According to Trumpf, the demand for such fibre lasers with high beam quality and power outputs below 1 kW shows promise but is still small relative to the market. “We would like to expand the market for low-power fibre lasers by offering industrial optical systems for a range of different fibre laser devices,” says Peter Leibinger, vice chairman of the Trumpf managing board. Meeting this goal would entail expanding both companies’ low-power diode-pumped solid-state laser products. Applications of these products include marking, cutting, and welding of medical device parts.
