Dutch R&D Firm Expands Its Amsterdam Facilities

Avantium Technologies B.V. has announced the expansion of its R&D facilities in Amsterdam to accommodate what it describes as strong growth in its high-throughput R&D business. The expansion will double the firm’s capacity with the addition of 2500 m2 of laboratory and office space. The company anticipates that it will begin using the new facilities by the first quarter of 2008.

Dymax Bonds with Crosslink Technologies
Adhesives manufacturer Dymax Corp. (Torrington, CT, USA) has acquired adhesives firm Crosslink Technologies (Fort Wayne, IN, USA). The acquisition will expand Dymax’s capabilities of providing design, engineering, and assembly services for high-speed automated applications. In addition, it will provide the firm with multifunctional cyanoacrylates, epoxy-based coatings, encapsulants, and light-cure adhesives.

MTL Research Joins EDMA
The European Diagnostic Manufacturers Association (EDMA; Brussels) has announced that the molecular-light technology firm MLT Research Ltd. has joined the group as a corporate affiliate. MLT Research Ltd. was founded in 1989 to develop the methods discovered at the University of Wales College of Medicine (Cardiff, Wales, UK) of using light-emitting molecules as alternatives to radioactive isotopes in diagnostic laboratory tests. MLT expects the cooperation with EDMA to promote its in vitro testing technology.

Ulbrich Acquires Delta Precision Alloys
Ulbrich Stainless Steels & Special Metals Inc. (North Haven, CT, USA) has announced the acquisition of Delta Precision Alloys (Montgomeryville, PA, USA). Delta Ulbrich Precision Metals will become part of the Ulbrich Specialty Wire Group, which consists of Ulbrich Shaped Wire and Ulbrich Precision Flat Wire in the United States and Ulbrich Precision Metals in Ireland. The group specializes in shaping, drawing, rolling, and plating custom-engineered wire-based products in a range of specialty metals and alloys. The acquisition will give Ulbrich enhanced capabilities in ultrafine wire drawing and electroplating with metals such as silver, gold, and nickel. It will also expand the firm’s offerings in pure metals and alloys including tungsten, molybdenum, titanium, and tantalum.

Automation Specialist Ismeca Is Renamed
Ismeca Europe Automation S.A. has announced that it is changing its name to Komax Systems LCF S.A. to reflect its parent company, the Komax Group, which acquired the firm 2 years ago. The firm’s factory in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, has been supplying automatic assembly solutions to industry for more than 40 years, producing millions of inhalers, specialty syringes, diagnostic kits, and a variety of other medical and consumer devices.

Zeus Ireland Expands
Zeus has established a production facility in Letterkenny, Ireland, which company officials announced is moving ahead as planned. Headquartered in Orangeburg, SC, USA, the company specializes in the design and production of high-performance polymer tubing used in demanding applications. The new plant, which opened its doors in 2006, was built to meet the growing demand for Zeus’s precision extrusions in the European Union’s medical, electronics, semiconductor, aviation, and aerospace industries. Offering heat-shrink capabilities, and PTFE and melt extrusion, the firm expects to have approximately 65 to 70 employees working at the Letterkenny site by year’s end.

Medical Accreditation Awarded to Vita’s TPE Group
The Swedish production facility of the VTC TPE Group, British Vita’s thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) compounding entity, has been certified to ISO 13485:2003 for the development, manufacture, marketing, and sales of TPE compounds for use by the medical device industry. The accreditation, approved by Intertek, follows the €3.7 million investment in a fourth production line at the site in 2006 and represents an important step in the group’s strategy to grow market share in the medical device market. The company’s Swedish branch is based in the city of Åmål.

Tissue-Bonding Firm Contracts with Full-Service Medical Device Firm

New BVMed Chairman Named
BVMed has elected Meinrad Lugan as its chairman of the board. Lugan has been a board member at B. Braun Melsungen for seven years and a member of BVMed’s board since the beginning of 2006. He succeeds Anton J. Schmidt, who has withdrawn from the board because of a change in career.
