Improved Batteries Developed for Implantable Applications

The next generation of the silver vanadium oxide (SVO) high-rate battery product line, produced using the nanoSVO process, promises to yield more-reliable batteries than are currently available.
A proprietary process that improves the homogeneity of cathode materials reportedly yields batteries that are more reliable than existing models. Greatbatch Inc. (Clarence, NY, USA) announced the qualification of the nanoSVO process in February. Batteries incorporating the technology will be made commercially available in the near future for use in next-generation implantable devices.

The technology marks a significant advance in the clinically proven silver vanadium oxide (SVO) high-rate battery product line, according to Greatbatch. The nanoSVO cathode manufacturing process integrates intellectual property the firm gained when it acquired NanoGram Devices Corp. in 2004.

Greatbatch designs and manufactures primary lithium and secondary lithium-ion batteries for implantable biomedical applications. Different shapes, sizes, and chemistries are available in a range of power capabilities.
