Powervar Introduces Custom Engineering

A supplier of power conditioning products, Powervar (Swindon, Wilts, UK) now provides custom products to healthcare industry OEMs. In addition to its standard components, the firm will be showcasing this custom capability at MEDTEC. Having achieved success in niche markets, the company noted that its power conditioners and uninterruptible power supplies were not meeting the needs of a growing number of medical device OEMs that frequently had particular size, shape, electrical, and certification requirements. “We observed that our off-the-shelf products were not a perfect fit for an increasing number of companies,” says Dennis Ver Mulm, vice president and marketing director. “Coincidentally, a customer approached us to design a custom IEC 60601–compliant power interface,” he explains. “The two events resulted in the decision in January 2005 to add custom engineering to our product and service offerings.”

Powervar originally focused on the manufacture of toroidal transformers after its founding in 1986 in Waukegan, IL, USA. The product line has expanded since then to include a range of power conditioning devices, backup-power supplies, and diagnostic tools. Establishing a presence in the European marketplace in 1998, the firm now has sales, service, and distribution capabilities in the United Kingdom and sales locations in Germany. Because of its ability to cater to the needs of manufacturers, the company received the 2004 Frost and Sullivan award for customer segment penetration in the healthcare sector for uninterruptible power supplies.

Driven by a desire to promote custom engineering and design to the international healthcare industry, Powervar will exhibit its custom and standard power conditioners at several shows in 2006. In addition to MEDTEC, the company will attend MD&M West in Anaheim, CA, USA and MD&M East in New York City. MEDTEC and the MD&M events are organized by Canon Communications llc, which also publishes this magazine.

“Being able to provide cost-efficient and effective power quality solutions will enable us to help healthcare OEMs function more profitably, while sustaining a higher level of service and reliability to their customers,” he adds. “In the end, improved healthcare is the result.”
