DuPont Project Aids in Polymer Selection

DuPont Engineering Plastics has introduced a polymer selection service to assist medical device design engineers.

Brian Buntz

A global initiative launched at Medica in Düsseldorf, Germany, seeks to assist medical device manufacturers with polymer selection to meet strength, flexibility, and chemical requirements. The programme from DuPont Engineering Plastics will also offer support for tool design, moulding applications, and compliance with customer and regulatory requirements.

The company’s portfolio of plastics comprises nine families; materials include acetal, liquid-crystal polymer, thermoplastic ether-ester elastomer, nylon- and polyamide resins, and PBT thermoplastic polyester. The line of materials is suitable for surgical instruments, drug-delivery systems, material-handling components, nonimplantable medical devices, and analytical and diagnostic equipment parts such as valves, pumps, and housings. To further its selection of materials for healthcare applications, the company is conducting research on new plastics and elastomers. Potential applications include components for medical valves, inhalers, and drug-delivery systems.
