Anyone interested in getting to know the bioscience cluster in Wales should make it a point to attend BioWales 2006. The annual event, scheduled for 23–24 March, will feature distinguished speakers as well as so-called brokerage opportunities that allow members from industry and academe to discuss research and development partnerships.

“Close to 100 technologies are typically available for brokerage,” says Robert B. Wallis, PhD, bioscience sector manager at the Welsh Development Agency. “[The gathering] brings in a lot of technologies from the continent,” he adds. Past events have resulted in several successful technology-transfer agreements between academic institutions, multinationals, and consortia.
This year’s keynote speakers are Sir William Castell, president and CEO of GE Healthcare, and Sir Christopher Evans, founder and chairman of Merlin Biosciences. The 2006 event will be held at the Vale Hotel in Hensol, near Cardiff. For more information, go to www.wda.co.uk/biowales.
