India-Based OEM Licenses German Drug-Delivery Technology

A coating technology for drug-eluting stents, developed by Blue Membranes GmbH (Wiesbaden, Germany), has been licensed for use by Relisys Medical Device Ltd., a medical device manufacturer based in India. This agreement provides Relisys with access to a carbon-based drug-delivery platform for its combination device portfolio in the coronary stent sector. It plans to market its products throughout the emerging markets of Asia and South America as well as in Europe and the United States.

Blue Membranes is focused on the development of nanostructured composite materials and coatings for medical device, biotechnology, and chemical processing technologies. The firm currently has five drug-delivery platforms available. The agreement with Relisys is the first step in a strategic collaboration, says Blue Membranes CEO Soheil Asgari. “We aim to integrate the manufacturing capabilities of Relisys,” says Asgari. “Additionally, we will support Relisys [in its bid] to get access to Europe.”

At the time of writing, Relisys was putting the finishing touches on its catheter-manufacturing facility. Once it is up and running, the company plans to seek US FDA approval for its line of drug-eluting stents.
