Agfa Chooses Barco Displays for Swiss PACS Project
Integrated sensor technology and quality assurance software work together to monitor DICOM quality on Barco displays. This and other features led to their selection for a picture archiving and communication project linking three Swiss hospitals.

Display systems made by a Belgian firm have been selected for the TriPACS project, which will bring state-of-the-art picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) to three hospitals in Zürich and Winterthur, Switzerland. The TriPACS system will allow the hospitals to digitally view, exchange, and store medical images. Agfa (Dübendorf, Switzerland) chose the displays developed by Barco N.V. (Kortrijk, Belgium) for integration with its PACS units because of their sensor technology, powerful controller, and overall functionality, says Dieter Kocher, manager, Healthcare Agfa, Switzerland.

The Coronis displays integrate I-Guard sensor technology that, in conjunction with quality assurance software, ensures DICOM quality over the displays’ entire life cycle. The display systems come with the company’s MediCal Administrator software. The computer program allows for centralized hospital-wide image-quality management. Technicians are immediately notified via e-mail, cell phone, or a simple network management protocol system if one of the displays performs below agreed-upon standards. “The software provides users with a powerful tool to access information in the entire display base and carry out QA checks from any remote location,” notes Kocher.

Barco also recently announced that it will supply a custom 13-in. flat-panel display for an ultrasound system being developed by Zonare Medical Systems (Mountain View, CA, USA). The z.one ultrasound platform reportedly provides the quality and performance of conventional ultrasound devices in a compact portable unit. Barco’s display combines the accuracy of CRT-based monitors with flat-panel technology, according to Thierry Watteyne, market director for Barco Modality OEM Solutions.
