Deep Moulding Technology CommercializedA company has obtained an exclusive license to the use of a deep moulding technology developed at North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC, USA). The recently formed Novolon Dimensional Fabrics Div. of Freudenberg Limited Partnership (Durham, NC, USA) will use the process to transform two-dimensional substrates into three-dimensional nonwoven products.
Behnam Pourdeyhimi and Trevor Little of North Carolina State University developed the deep moulding method to impart attributes in base fabrics that are initially absent. Airflow, water absorption, and compression resistance can be programmed into the materials by adjusting the variables and process parameters. Resilience and light weight are among the resulting properties.
The deep moulding process can also work with knits and woven fabrics, and will soon be capable of creating male and female mouldings using a 24-in. moulding press.
