eNewsLean Manufacturing Outlined in Free Online Course
An e-learning company that focuses on workforce skills is offering a free online training course titled Going Lean: Introduction to Lean Concepts. The interactive multimedia program that deals with improving workplace performance is offered by Automated Learning Corp. (Kanata, ON, Canada). The course can be found at www.automatedlearning.com/ mpmn.cfm; the free offer expires on 1 December 2005.
Topics covered include the advantages of going lean, examples of eight kinds of waste, the obstacles to transformation, and the metrics of lean manufacturing. Becoming a truly lean organization and being completely and fully functional will also be reviewed. Interested individuals can register on the firm’s Web site.
The firm provides customized consulting and training solutions as well as other off-the-shelf courses on issues such as safety and ESD.
Standards and Technical Documents Available through Online Store
More than 1 million conformity assessment standards and technical documents can be sourced and purchased online. The Intertek Standards Store was launched in June by ETL Semko, a division of Intertek plc (Leatherhead, Surrey, UK). It can be accessed at www.intertek-standards.com.
Such medical standards as IEC 60601-1 and UL 60601-1 can be searched by standard number, name, or key text. The standards, regulations, parts data, design guides, and other technical information on the site were compiled from a variety of sources including standards development organizations, manufacturers, government agencies, and key industry organizations.
“Many technical professionals rely on our global Web site as a testing and certification resource,” says Gregg Tiemann, president of Intertek ETL Semko Americas. “The online standards store is a logical value-added service.”
Company Adds 3-D CAD Models of Flow-Control Products to Web Site
To support the rapid growth of 3-D CAD techniques, a firm has added 3-D models of its manifold, valve, and tube fitting products to its Web site. The CAD models can be downloaded at www.parker.com and directly inserted into most CAD systems including AutoCAD, Catia, Pro/Engineer, and SolidWorks.
This function will be of particular benefit to engineers working on space-sensitive applications, according to Parker Instrumentation (Barnstaple, Devon, UK). The 3-D models simplify shape and clearance visualizations for human factors engineering purposes.
Downloadable 3-D models and 2-D drawings are available for most of the firm’s industrial tube fittings, instrumentation valves, and manifolds, as well as its range of high-purity PTFE and PFA valves and fittings. Models of high-purity regulators and valves will be added soon, according to the company.
