Compact Parylene Deposition System Introduced
A supplier of parylene coating services and equipment has announced the introduction of a compact system designed to handle small volumes. The small size and robust construction of the C-30-S from Comelec S.A. (La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland) make it suitable for laboratory tasks as well as production use. As it does for its other models, the company offers customers comprehensive technical assistance.
Cardiac assist devices, pipettes, needles, catheters, and electronic assemblies are suitable candidates for parylene coatings. The polymerization process takes place at room temperature, under vacuum conditions. “No solvents or additives are used,” stresses European marketing manager Laurent Morisset. “And there are no cure forces that might damage fragile components.”
Parylene can be applied in layers as thin as 1 µm. Because it is converted directly from a molecular monomer to a polymer film during deposition, the material reliably conforms to the product’s surface. Pinhole-free coverage is ensured.
Parylene N and parylene C are the most commonly used formulations for medical devices. Parylene C blends electrical and physical properties, and has low permeability to moisture and corrosive gases. Parylene N is characterized by high dielectric strength and a high penetration dielectric constant independent of frequency.
