New Name and Director General for Sterile Packaging Association

The European Sterilization Packaging Association (ESPA) has changed its name to the Sterile Barrier Association (SBA) to reflect members’ changing activities. SBA represents producers of single-use sterilization packaging materials for the European healthcare market.

“Current members felt that the name ESPA did not adequately portray the scope of their activities anymore,” says newly appointed director general Dave Harding. Most members are large, international companies that supply medical device manufacturers and hospitals across the globe. Although their business is concentrated in Europe, the name change corresponds to an increase in the breadth of their market.

Formed 12 years ago, the association includes members that produce raw materials, provide sterilizing services, and build processing machinery. Current members collectively supply around 70% of the market for sterile barrier systems in Europe.

Harding’s recent appointment as director general caps 30 years of industry experience. He is familiar with the challenges of manufacturing and the demands of the medical market. “The pace of change in the market is breathtaking,” he observes. “I aim to ensure that SBA fully supports its members in continuing to meet the needs of the medical industry.”
