Laser Welding Material Passes USP Class VI Tests

The near-infrared absorbents used in a laser welding process to join clear and opaque plastics have met the requirements of USP Class VI guidelines. The Clearweld process was developed jointly by the UK-based industrial research organization TWI (Cambridge, UK) and Gentex Corp. (Carbondale, PA, USA), which is commercializing the technology worldwide. The biological reactivity tests were conducted by the independent testing house NAMSA (Northwood, OH, USA).

The Clearweld process uses specialty coatings and resins to achieve hermetically sealed welds in plastic materials. The light-absorbing materials focus laser energy and convert it into heat. Localized heating at the interface results in minimal thermal and mechanical stress, and produces no particulates or flash. Meeting USP Class VI requirements ensures that the absorbent materials will not be a barrier to obtaining
US FDA approval for welded products.
