Biomedical Polymer Compounder Installs Extrusion Line![]() |
| An extruder with an advanced process monitoring system has been installed in Foster Corp.’s new compounding plant. |
State-of-the-art extrusion equipment has been added at a recently opened biomedical polymer compounding facility. The Liestritz ZSE 27-mm twin-screw extruder integrates GMP technology. The machine is a large investment, notes Ken Pickering, director of operations,
Foster Corp. (Putnam, CT, USA). But it was necessary, he adds. “The heart of our operation is [extruding] material solutions for medical and pharmaceutical manufacturers.”
The 600-rpm, 25-hp extruder includes a processing system that monitors all important parameters. System features include accurate and consistent feed streams and a modular screw-and-barrel setup. The latter increases efficiency and turnarounds when processing varied materials.
“The line between medical devices and drug delivery has become less defined,” says Pickering. “The Leistritz [allows us] to provide precision materials involving either traditional medical or drug-delivery formulations.” The 45,000-sq-ft plant went on-line at the beginning of the year.
