UK Design Council Helps Diagnostic Product Break New Ground
A handheld diagnostic device harnesses biosensor technology to allow the simultaneous measurement of up to six parameters from a single test strip.

A low-cost point-of-care medical diagnostic device that will soon reach the market has benefited from the UK Design Council’s Humanizing Technology initiative. The project is intended to help companies match developing technologies to end-user needs. One of eight companies participating in the initiative, Oxford Biosensors (Yarnton, Oxon, UK), says its multisensor handheld system is designed to meet market demand for fast, accurate multiparameter analysis.

Biosensor technology represents an opportunity to revolutionize diagnostics in the healthcare field, according to the firm. Yet only single-sensor formats are currently available. The new Multisense device requires only a small drop of blood to test several parameters. Results are obtained in a matter of seconds at the point of care.

Simultaneous measurement of up to six parameters can be carried out on a single test strip. Similar in size to a mobile phone, the analyzer incorporates micrometer-sized electrodes made of carbon ink and plastic substrates; it can be docked to recharge and download data. The test strips are disposable, do not require refrigeration, and calibrate automatically.

The company’s initial focus is on cardiac risk and chest pain diagnostics in acute-care situations. Tests for renal and neonatal care, liver function, and statin management are in the pipeline.

Oxford Biosensors was founded in 2000 to capitalize on electrochemical research that was being conducted at Oxford University. Its stated mission is to develop easy-to-use handheld diagnostic equipment. The company’s involvement with the Humanizing Technology initiative has helped it to identify strategic areas requiring design expertise. By working with a small group of early-stage, cutting-edge technology firms, the Design Council seeks to show how design can prevent the misuse of technology.
