PRODUCT UPDATE

SurModics Inc.

Medical devices often require multiple surface characteristics to ensure the best possible performance. In addition to providing a combination of lubricious and haemocompatible coatings for medical devices, SurModics Inc. (Eden Prairie, MN, USA) can simultaneously engineer surfaces to deliver therapeutic or antimicrobial agents.

Covalently bound hydrogels that produce lubricious coatings can reduce friction by more than 90%. The company’s PhotoLink technology enables device OEMs to apply these coatings within seconds in some cases, using water or water and alcohol-based solutions under ambient conditions. Haemocompatible surface treatments are available using either a photo-modified heparin or nonheparin alternative coating.

The company’s drug-eluting coatings provide a polymeric matrix that acts as a reservoir to incorporate unbound therapeutic or antimicrobial agents. The drugs are released from the surface of a medical device at a controlled rate.
Because the coatings are extremely thin, users can combine any number of surface characteristics without affecting the physical properties and dimensions of the devices being processed.
