PRODUCT UPDATE

Product Release Europe ApS

A supplier of contract surface treatment services recently announced the opening of a facility that will provide an array of coatings developed by STS Biopolymers (Henrietta, NY, USA). Product Release Europe ApS (Kvistgård, Denmark) will provide Slip-Coat and other processes designed to enhance such properties as lubricity, biocompatibility, and ultrasound visibility to medical device OEMs. The 500-m2 plant with a Class 100,000 cleanroom was scheduled to begin operating in February.

Thin and flexible, Slip-Coat adheres to both wet and dry metal substrates. It is permanent and nonthrombogenic and has a smooth, nonslip feel when dry. Immediately upon contact with body fluids or water, the coating becomes ultraslippery, thus reducing friction and increasing a physician’s ability to control the guidewire during insertion.

Formulations have been used to successfully treat devices fabricated from polymers, titanium, and nitinol, including vascular and urinary catheters, urinary stents, and guidewires.

Other surface treatment services that will be provided by the firm include Echo-Coat, an echogenic surface coating that heightens a device’s visibility during ultrasound imaging; Graft-Coat, which can be used to improve the existing surfaces of devices and to incorporate a range of pharmaceutical agents; and Medi-Coat, a heparin-containing polymer coating that renders implants and in-dwelling catheters haemocompatible for sustained periods of time.
