Air Compressor/Vacuum Pump Reduces Noise, Vibration![]() |
| Brothers Steve and Michael McGrath have developed the AIMS pump, which is designed to reduce noise and vibration. |
A company that makes variable-displacement linear piston air compressors and vacuum pumps has developed a combination unit with an encapsulated, sealed construction that operates with minimal noise and vibration. The AIMS, designed by the UK-based company Archfact Ltd. (Waterlooville, Hants, UK) is suited for heart-assist devices as well as other medical applications.
The component can serve as a motor-driven air compressor or as a vacuum pump. Steve McGrath, the company's engineering director, explains that the alternating-current input supply in the unit energizes an electromagnet, which in turn attracts the piston, thus compressing its return-spring system. The compression draws air through the inlet valve; the air then travels over the electromagnetic coils before passing into the main cylinder. When the electromagnet is deenergized, the return-spring system propels the piston back and the air is compressed through the outlet valve.
The piston and spring are the only moving parts and therefore energy loss is minimized. The pump can perform 3000 cycles per second at 50 Hz and 3600 cycles per second at 60 Hz. The unit is supplied in both European and US voltages and is offered in a 12- or 24-V format.
"We first introduced the AIMS pump to the company's existing medical clients, who received it with enthusiasm," says Archfact marketing director Michael McGrath. "Now we are able to offer precision engineering services for manufacturers that need the pump adapted to a specific application."
