PRODUCT UPDATE

Collano AG

A UV-cure hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesive has been introduced for applications involving direct skin contact. According to Collano AG (Sempach-Station, Switzerland), the adhesive does not leave behind a residue when it is removed from the skin, and will not cause skin irritation.

Compared with conventional hot-melt products designed for skin contact, the acrylic-based HMPSA has two primary advantages, according to Manuel Leumann, division manager for the medical industry. "It combines heat resistance with excellent skin compatibility, making it suitable for use in first-aid kits that are kept in the car, and for steam-sterilizable surgical drape tapes," says Leumann. "And the acrylic adhesive has a moisture-vapour transmission rate that is greater than 1000 g/m2/day, or about 30 times greater than that of a thermoplastic-rubber-based hot-melt adhesive." This property, he notes, is desirable in wound-care products such as incision films.
