PRODUCT UPDATE
Loctite Corp.
A high-performance UV-light-cure medical adhesive designed for metal-to-glass bonding has been introduced. Developed by Loctite Corp. (Düsseldorf, Germany), the product withstands steam sterilization and is suited for bonding needle assemblies, syringes, oxygenators, filters, and reusable devices that require limited repeated steam sterilization.
Loctite 3345 is a single-component, UV-cure acrylic adhesive that complies with ISO 10993 biocompatibility requirements. Available in 25-ml syringes and 1-L bottles, the medium-viscosity product performs well after temperature aging.
Part of the German Henkel group, Loctite also offers low- and high-viscosity UV-cure cyanoacrylates (UVCAs). Initially developed to bond needle assemblies, the products' key benefit is their shadow curing properties, according to medical market manager Christine Salerni, who works at the company's US facility. "UVCAs will cure between small gaps in opaque parts but they can also be UV cured in exposed areas," Salerni says. "In applications where there is an exposed and a shadowed area, customers would typically use two different adhesives. With UVCAs, they can accomplish both tasks with one product," she adds.
