Philippe Starck, who has his Web site at www.philippe-starck.com, is the man who put the fun back into design. Far too many designers, engineers, and, indeed, medical professionals take their jobs too seriously, and they become boring, predictable, and closed minded. Starck, the mad Frenchman, I am happy to say, is none of the above! When your brain is exhausted and you need a break from patents, drawing boards, and that 150-page article on the latest polymer resin, click on the link and have a think about what Starck might create if he were in your shoes.
It's difficult to explain how I use the Bioluminescence Web site at www.lifesci.ucsb.edu/~biolum, but when I can't find a solution to a problem and begin to doubt that there actually is one, I have a look for some reassurance and inspiration. Even the most imaginative person would brush off what's on this site as fantasy. I think it's a good example of "anything is possible." The organic structure of these creatures is also extremely inspirational and reflective of modern, futuristic mechanics, and reminds me a lot of medical and surgical device design.
