PRODUCT UPDATE

Carmeda AB

Coatings designed to improve the haemocompatibility of blood-contacting devices typically have difficulty in staying on the device surface. Carmeda AB (Upplands Väsby, Sweden) has developed a proprietary heparin coating that retains thromboresistant properties for periods lasting several months. The heparin coating is used for critical applications such as coronary stents, vascular grafts, ventricular assist devices, coronary bypass oxygenator circuits, and other devices to reduce complications such as clotting, thromboemboli, and infection.

A small amount of heparin works to provide thromboresistance on the device surface. It is a nonleaching material that remains active longer than other coatings according to the firm.
