Materials used in medical care may cause complications such as bacterial infection, blood clots, and tissue trauma. These issues can be addressed by using BioLast, a proprietary flexible coating technology from AST Products (Billerica, MA, USA). BioLast incorporates antimicrobial, antithrombogenic agents and offers biocompatibility, lubricity, durability, adhesion, and drug-delivery properties.
AST Products offers a variety of surface coatings that enhance the performance of medical devices. "We can customize a coating to address just about any problem that may come up during the development and design stage of a medical device," explains Suzanne Conroy, group manager for medical coatings. "Our coatings are unique in that they are created without leaving a solvent residue on devices, and they can easily incorporate compounds, drugs, or biomolecules," Conroy adds.
The company's BioLast products include a lubricious and biocompatible coating for medical devices that minimizes tissue trauma, an infection-resistant coating, a hydrophilic coating, a biocompatible dielectric coating, an antithrombogenic coating, an anitencrustation coating used to prevent surface hardening, and an antirestenosis coating.
