PRODUCT UPDATE

MedSource Technologies

To effectively diagnose and treat patients, a physician must be able to accurately measure body temperature. To increase the precision of this important task, MedSource Technologies Inc. (Minneapolis, MN, USA) has introduced a catheter that incorporates Type K or T thermocouples directly into the product's thin walls. Measuring 0.001 x 0.003 in., the sensors meet or exceed published performance standards for this class of device and may be placed anywhere along the catheter shaft. Multiple sensors can also be accommodated for temperature-gradient applications.

The catheter's overall profile is minimized as a result of the sensors' integration into the tube wall. This unique construction also eliminates problems associated with positioning and glue breakage. According to company sources, the diameter of the integrated-sensor tubing is limited only by the size of the wire used to power the thermocouple. Assembled using a continuous automated process, this product also offers cost savings when compared to some hand-assembled devices.

Offered in a range of sizes, the tubing can be constructed from many different materials to suit specific needs. "We specialize in making polyimide products, but this process is compatible with almost any type of tubing plastic," says director of advanced technologies David Proctor.
