PRODUCT UPDATE
Silicone Altimex Ltd.
"In
this industry, materials and production methods are constantly evolving to meet
the increasingly demanding requirements of device manufacturers," says David
Eccles, business development manager for Silicone Altimex Ltd. (Nottingham,
UK). "Lately, a particular concern for OEMs has been materials that facilitate
sterilization." Produced in a Class 10,000 cleanroom so as to eliminate cross-contamination
with peroxide catalysts, a sterilizable platinum-cured silicone tube from Silicone
Altimex is helping to meet this demand.
Transparent and chemically inert, the tubing provides a nonstick surface finish. The biocompatible product is stable over a wide temperature range and is free from cross-link by-products. Though produced under controlled conditions to limit initial contamination, the product can be further sterilized using EtO, gamma radiation, or autoclave processes. Resistant to yellowing, the tubing does not impair a patient's sense of smell or taste.

According to company sources, the tubing is suited for use in peristaltic pumps, infusion sets, dialysis equipment, external feeding systems, and abdominal and other drains. If desired, the product can be modified to provide radiopaque stripes and other special characteristics.
