MD&M East Returns to New York City

The Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East 2002 Conference and Exposition, hosted by the Canon Communications family of design and manufacturing publications, will be held in New York at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on 3–6 June. The show will be co-located with the Atlantic Design and Manufacturing and PLASTEC East expositions, as well as EastPack. Exhibitors will include assembly, manufacturing, and CNC equipment companies; raw-materials suppliers; sterilization and cleanroom equipment suppliers; and hundreds of firms spanning the spectrum of disposable-device manufacturing—injection moulding, extrusion, mould design, surface treatment, welding, and bonding. Special feature- product pavilions will display medical electronics; automation technology; CAD, CAM, and PDM; and medical packaging and supplies. The MD&M conference and workshops, held 3–5 June, will focus on topics such as biodurable polyurethanes for medical devices, risk analysis, packaging process equipment and validation, and the US and EU medical device mutual recognition agreement.

Seminar Highlights MEMS Technology

The second annual MEMS Technology Seminar, to be held 17–19 June, in Boston, MA, USA, will focus on biomedical sciences. The seminar will begin with an introduction to the MEMS field and a tutorial on the fundamentals of MEMS device fabrication. The course will then give attendees detailed insight into bioMEMS and the features of these micromachines in terms of design, materials, and fabrication techniques. Specific application areas, such as implantable drug delivery, biomimetic interfaces, tissue engineering, microsurgical tools, biosensing, fluidic manipulation, and therapeutic microsystems, will also be covered in detail. The commercialization of bioMEMs will also be discussed, along with biocompatibility issues, systems integration issues, and future directions of the field.

Symposium Assesses Tissue Engineering

A symposium on tissue engineering is to be held 19–23 May at the Royal Myconian Conference Centre in Myconos, Greece. The objectives of the symposium are to assess tissue engineering, identify the rate-limiting steps in research, and develop a strategic vision for the future.

The symposium will address the structure and function of the relationships among cells, biomolecules, and biomaterials as components of tissue-engineered systems. The five-day event will also include a discussion of product development considerations.

Berlin Hosts EuroBioChips

EuroBioChips, a microarray and microfluidic technologies event, will be held 25–28 June at the Berlin Hilton in Berlin. EuroBioChips is designed to address key microtechnology issues impacting the pharmaceutical and biotech industries.

The four-day event will focus on the innovations and applications of DNA and protein microarrays and microfluidics, how they aid drug discovery, and how they facilitate the development of predictive and diagnostic tests. Two interactive preconference workshops are included. One conference session is devoted to the business behind the biochip industry, and another conference session will target emerging technologies.
