Beyond Quality Control

"Traditionally, companies have added more and more complex lighting systems to enhance the performance of video inspection systems," says Gary Hobart, international sales manager at C.E. Johansson (Irvine, CA, USA). "We took the reverse approach and made the edge-detection unit, rather than the lighting system, do the work for us." Onyx, the company's automatic metrology system, became available in 2001. Because its edge-detection unit works in almost zero-level light conditions, Hobart says, Onyx is ideal for analyzing and measuring subjects that are difficult to illuminate, such as deep-draw plastic mouldings. The system can be used on injection needles and stents, as well as IV components. The video system comprises a half-inch Sony Exview colour CCD sensor and a digitally programmable 6.8x zoom cell. At a working distance of 62 mm, the system allows magnifications from 34x to 235x. On-axis, profile, and ring light are provided.

"We also designed Onyx to be a flexible, multisensor system," says Hobart. Onyx can be ordered, or upgraded later, with a 685-nm laser diode probe and Renishaw TP20 touch probe. The stage's threaded holes are designed to accommodate multitool, multicavity inspection. The MetriVie Windows-based software platform, Hobart adds, permits easy operation and automation, export of measurement data, and video capture of images.
