High-speed winder permits in-process reel and coil changes

Depending on process characteristics, a winder can coil flexible tubing and profiles at rates up to 500 m/min. In addition, the AC Auto Winder, introduced by Boston Matthews (Diglis, Worcs, UK) at K 2001, allows the user to automatically change reels or coils in process. Traditionally, lines are either slowed down or stopped to accommodate reel changeovers. With the introduction of this unit, says managing director C. T. Brookes, winder changeovers are no longer a brake on line speed.

An automated changeover sequence virtually eliminates the need for operator intervention. When the preprogrammed length has been reached, an alarm sounds and the winder automatically cuts the tubing and attaches it to a new reel. Meanwhile, the completed reel is ready for off-loading. "Without automation, you're limited to speeds of about 45 metres per minute," notes Brookes. "We can add several other features, including automatic wrapping and strapping, to further automate the process."

The winders are available with a range of standard coil formers; they can be customized to match existing reel sizes. "Tension is controlled to very fine levels, even with lightweight products," says Brookes, who cites a current application that involves winding 4-mm-diam tubing at speeds of 430 m/min.
