Small-pitch nozzles find niche in tight space applications
Small-pitch hot-runner nozzles suited for moulding small parts and space-constrained applications may benefit device manufacturers. The MIM Dura Atto nozzles were introduced by Mold-Masters Europe (Baden-Baden, Germany) at the recent K 2001 show.
A cartridge heater effectively turns the nozzles' melt channel into an integral heater with an optimized axial profile. Because the body diameter is smaller than 9 mm and gate vestiges are minimal, the hot runners are beneficial to manufacturers moulding small products in which aesthetic appearance is critical. They are also well suited for medical products with core diameters greater than 16 mm, according to marketing manager Wayne Stoddard.
The MIM Dura Atto nozzles are available in two flange options. The 10-mm centre-to-centre pitch model is suited for tight gating locations, while the 15-mm nozzle is recommended for internal gating of small components. The latter is also advantageous in applications that require high-rate cooling channels or that incorporate complex inserts or mechanical components. Shot sizes range from <1 to 30 g.
