Fibre-Optic Light Modules are Cool, Quiet

The LM24 fibre-optic light module from Welch Allyn Inc. creates light that is up to three times brighter than some halogen equivalents and produces less noise and heat.

Miniature fibre-optic light modules that produce bright white light with little noise or heat are suited for use in a range of medical applications, including microscopy and endoscopy. Manufactured by Welch Allyn Inc. (Skaneateles Falls, NY, USA), the Solarc LM24 and LE24 modules deliver 24-W xenon-like light that is up to three times brighter than some halogen equivalents. “Our systems provide some of the industry’s best lumens-per-watt illumination,” says marketing manager Ian Edwards. “But their low power requirements significantly reduce the amount of heat that must be removed by noisy fans.” The plug-and-play modules come preengineered with mounting holes and power connections to speed time to market. Other benefits include a 500-hour lamp life that improves maintenance cycles.

The light modules are powered by a current of 11–16 V and deliver an average output of 500 lm. The LM24 module consists of a lamp, an integrated cooling mounting block, a ballast, and a connector cable assembly. The LE24 unit contains these same components, but mounts them inside a rugged housing that eliminates EMI and simplifies use with other value-added equipment. The LM24 unit measures 69 x 68 x 63 mm; the LE24 module has dimensions of 85 x 82 x 162 mm. Operating temperatures span 0° to 40°C for both units. The components support most fibre-optic interfaces, with optimal light delivery through bundles with diameters of 2–4 mm. The fibre-optic connections are attached using two front-threaded mounting holes that preserve the lamps’ focal point. Units with power ratings of 50 and 60 W are also available.
