Spotlight on Adhesives and Adhesive Products
Adhesive-coated
films
A
fully integrated supplier of customized component materials and converted products
for the device sector offers two new adhesive-coated films. RX 913P is a 1-mil,
clear polyurethane film coated with an acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive.
RX 914 is a 1-mil, clear, copolyester film coated with an acrylic pressure-sensitive
adhesive. The new materials can be customized to include pigments, antimicrobials,
or other active ingredients. Common applications are wound care, IV site dressings,
topical delivery systems, ostomy care, and transdermal delivery systems. Scapa
Medical, Brussels, Belgium.
UV adhesive
dispenser
Designed
for precise, repeatable, and quick dispensing of UV adhesives onto PVC, ABS,
and other medical-grade polymers, a dispenser can apply adhesives to the internal
or external surfaces of tubing, conical surfaces, needles, and various types
of connectors and components. Advantages of the DUV dispenser include speed,
reproducible bonding, ease of use, and optimal protection against light that
might otherwise cause unwanted polymerization. Tecnoideal S.r.l., Mirandola
(MO), Italy.
Cyanoacrylate dispenser
A
system for dispensing cyanoacrylates is designed to eliminate waste, hazards,
and discomfort from the process. The PP300-A Clear-View pressure chamber system
allows cyanoacrylate to be dispensed directly from a jar or bottle; the material
never has to be transferred from the supplied container. I & J Fisnar
France S.A., Pontoise, France.
Instant and light-cure adhesives
Solvent-free
adhesives are compatible with most sterilization methods. The one-part adhesives
include both light-cure and instant products, along with flexible adhesives
and sealants. Light-cure adhesives are suited for applications where one of
the components is transparent. Such adhesives cure fully in 2 to 60 seconds
to depths of 3 to 13 mm or more, providing rigid or flexible joints. Instant
adhesives can be applied to such difficult-to-join polyolefins as Santoprene,
FEP, and polyethylene. Loctite European Group, Garching-Hochbruck, Germany.
Adhesive curing lamp
A
lamps unique filter and bulb reflector assembly enable its 35-W bulb to
produce 10 times more UV light than conventional 100-W curing lamps. The Maxima
3500 is suited for use with medical assemblies and is available in 120- and
230-V ac versions, as well as 12-V dc versions. The lamps special polymer
housing is dentproof and shock resistant. An ergonomic design, stay-cool hand
grip and light weight allow technicians to hold the Maxima 3500 for long periods
without stress or fatigue. Spectronics Corp., Westbury, NY, USA.
Acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive
Growing
demand for components for diagnostic dipsticks and lateral-flow devices encouraged
a company to develop a proprietary acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive. GL-187
is a high-tack, high-shear adhesive applied to both sides of a thin polyester
film. It resists UV light and qualifies as a nonirritant. The adhesive works
with backed or unbacked nitrocellulose and simplifies component assembly. The
company also supplies a test strip cutter and offers printing, laminating, and
die-cutting services to the device sector. G & L Precision Die Cutting
Inc., Amstelveen, Netherlands.
Cyanoacrylates
A
full line of multiple-grade cyanoacrylate adhesives is suited for use with materials
such as acetyl, nylon, and rubber, as well as opaque plastics including polyethylenes,
acrylics, and polycarbonates. The Medi-Cure 222 Series is certified to USP Class
VI and ISO 10993. The adhesives high cure speeds minimize blooming, odours,
and vapours without compromising bond strengths. Dymax GmbH, Frankfurt,
Germany.
Hydrophilic technology
Hydrophilic
coatings, heat-sealable adhesives, and pressure-sensitive tapes can be used
in a variety of in vitro diagnostic products, including capillary flow, lateral
flow, microfluidic, and electrophoretic devices. The company offers custom polymerization,
adhesive formulation, mixing, and coating, as well as release liner design supported
by extensive R&D experience. Adhesives Research Europe Ltd., Great
Dunmow, Essex, UK.
