In a move aimed at increasing the resources they provide to European device manufacturers, Dot GmbH (Rostock, Germany) and Diocom B.V. (Bennekom, Netherlands) have set up a third company called Diodot GmbH to offer medical packaging and laser etching services. Dot supplies a range of coating technologies and services to the medical device industry including bioactive coatings, surface treatments, and grinding and finishing of implants, while Diocom focusses on orthopaedics.
Giles Melsom, director of Diodot, said the two companies decided to form a third entity after realizing that European medical device manufacturers needed the services of a "well-oiled large-volume organization" to supplement in-house capabilities. "We recognized that there is a wide range of medical device manufacturers in Europe, most of whom are small to mid-sized companies," says Melsom. "Many of these companies need to source their requirements to remain competitive." The new company is located adjacent to the Dot facilities and has a Class 1000 cleanroom for packaging services.
"We will do all the required cleaning, laser etching, passivation treatment, blister and pouch packaging, labelling, and shrink wrapping in-house, as well as provide an outsourced gamma sterilization service," says Melsom. The company plans to offer nonspecific packaging to allow customers to benefit from a large-volume-price policy without actually having the volume.
"We hope the services of the three companies combined will make us a one-stop shop for medical device manufacturers," says Melsom.
