Schurter Gets Green Light for ISO 14001

A supplier of electrical components, Schurter AG (Luzern, Switzerland) has been granted ISO 14001 certification. "ISO 14001 enables a company to manage its environmental obligations and responsibilities in the same way that ISO 9001 implements quality processes," says company spokesman Joe Hamilton. Schurter is among the first wave of companies to demonstrate compliance with the standard.

Companies seeking to comply with ISO 14001 are required to have a corporate environmental policy, an implementation strategy, a periodic auditing program, and a management review process.

Schurter has integrated ISO 14001 into its existing ISO 9001 quality management system. The company, which supplies device manufacturers with a variety of electrical equipment including fuse holders, cord sets, power entry modules, and line filters, is currently emphasizing the development of products that facilitate the design of energy-conserving equipment. Recently developed components that meet this goal include a power-management module that automatically shuts off idle computer monitors and an energy-save switch that performs the same function on other electrical equipment.
