Physik Instrumente Completes Expansion
Physik Instrumente (PI; Waldbronn, Germany) and its sister company Polytec has recently completed construction on a new 10,000-m2 facility, doubling the amount of usable space available to the group. The $6.6-million expansion includes a new demo room that allows easier customer access to both companies' latest technology. A measuring and testing lab with 0.1°C stability is designed for the development of products with subnanometer precision.
PI supplies nanopositioning products to industry and OEMs for use in fibre optics, precision machine tools, and medical analysis equipment. Other products from PI include piezoelectric nanopositioners and components, micropositioners, and motor controllers.
PI marketing manager Stefan Vorndran states, "With current techniques it is possible to manufacture scanning systems with subnanometer resolution, but repeatability and unwanted motion on axes other than the command axis are always a problem. With new techniques such as active error compensation we will be able [to] build scanning and positioning systems with subnanometer repeatability in more than one axis, an important step forward. The extremely stable lab is a requirement for testing and verifying the quality and accuracy of our new products."
