Films Combine Breathability with Barrier Properties

Arange of breathable and waterproof films and laminates was recently launched by Ace S.A. (Liège, Belgium) for the medical market. "The advantage of Code 760 over other materials," says Patricia Featherstone of Ace, "is that it's a breathable film that allows perspiration to travel through it while presenting a barrier to viruses. Ever since the cross-contamination scare, there has been a growing need for a material with these properties."

The film is manufactured from Pebax resins, a monolithic polymer produced by Elf Atochem that permits the passage of molecules. While the film has numerous applications, it is particularly well suited for the medical field, says Featherstone. The material is antistatic, making it ideal for use in the operating room, and it retains its qualities after repeated laundering and sterilization.

The film can be supplied in bulk or laminated form. "We also offer it with a thicker laminate for wound-care applications," adds Featherstone. The company offers clients a choice of extrusion coating or adhesive lamination.

According to Featherstone, a less-costly version of Code 760 will be released by Ace early this year. "It's also a microporous, breathable film, but it is designed for applications where viral contamination is not a concern," she says.
