Polymers used in medical technology (MT) must satisfy many stringent demands. In addition to high-purity standards and challenging conditions, they must meet many regulatory criteria. Ticona has developed numerous MT grades in six resin families that are excellent candidates for use throughout the healthcare sector:

Celcon® and Hostaform® acetal copolymer (POM);

Celanex® polybutylene terephthalate (PBT);

Fortron® polyphenylene sulfide (PPS);

GUR® ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE);

Medical Uses for Engineering Polymers
Polymers comprise nearly half of all medical technology materials used. As medical applications grow more sophisticated, manufacturers are turning to engineering thermoplastics to gain the performance they need in such end uses as:

Drug delivery systems, e.g., inhalers and needleless injection devices;

Diagnostic systems

Medical device components, e.g. clamps, cannulas, sterilization containers, blood filters and instruments for minimally invasive surgery; and

Orthopedic implants and ortheses

The need to ensure drugs are administered easily, safely and at the recommended dosage has fostered a trend toward smart products, such as insulin injection pens, powder inhalers for asthmatics and needleless syringes.
